    Star Citizens

    Has anybody else here seen/gotten excited about Star Citizens? Basically it's a space-fighter/FPS/mmo/rpg looking game. Sounds a bit like eve for the space combat part, but it seems like it has the potential to be crazy beautiful graphics-wise, and be really involved.

    It's being crowd funded right now and surpassed $28 million raised (which is CRAZY...they've gone through something like 35 stretch goals). They also said it'll support mantle (BF4 being the first game to do so).

    Just thought some people here might be intrigued.

    Hahaha, sweet! I'm debating getting one of these ships with LTI during the "sale" they're having this week, but I'm not all the way in yet. And the 300 series is really pretty...

    Question - What is it exactly? In terms of gameplay it sounds like X: Rebirth. Is that close?

    Reddit's pretty crazy about this right now.

    I'm looking pretty hard at this. I'm trying not to get too excited because we really have no idea when the game is actually coming out, but I check back in about once a week. I will probably be buying myself some ships for Christmas.

    After all.... He's a Roberts, I'm a Roberts....

    So what's in the game as of now? There isn't any clear indication that I can find. I'm definitely looking at this too, but I'm not trying to drop a whole bunch of money right now.

    The constellation is a nice ship. I wish I could get my hands on something big like that.

    I'm also looking to Christmas to see what I'll do.

    But from what I've seen, they have a very polished engine where you can walk around your hanger in first and third person, and get into the cockpit to push some buttons. That's about it, but they're supposed to release a dog-fighting update next.

    They are using CryEngine.
    Though because they have so much money they are probably paying CryTek to modify the engine to their needs, as it does not really fit out of the box. (Quite a few issues with maps over 8x8 and player counts above 32/64.)

    It looks quite interesting, definitely the large scale multiplayer, but advertising with "look how many polygons we have" always makes me a bit cautious. It's like advertising a car with "Look how much fuel it uses!"

    Yeah, graphics being the main driving point of this game, my puny computer can miss that.

    They have stated from the beginning that Chris Roberts is doing this on his own terms because kickstarter has allowed him to do so. He said he always felt publishers and technology prevented him from his dream game. I have seen it quoted many times that this game is going to be a monster of game requiring a damn good computer to run it at the high levels. We will see what the final specs are like but seeing as this game is nowhere close to being released in its full potential I wouldn't worry about trying to make sure your computer can run it right now.

    I think I could manage to buy a couple more horses in a year or so (especially if mantle is as big as they say).

    I'm curious, though, what roles do people want to try? I'm thinking information runner or smuggler. Basically (ideally) something low volume, high margin.

    Or a merc. That's always fun too, lol.

    Wait, is this game multiplayer? I was under the impression it was singleplayer.

    There's so little I know about this game, but I haven't found anywhere with solid information.

    its both.. there is a single player campaign. However the real meat and potatoes is going to be multiplayer. It is going to absolutely epic in scale. And you can literally do anything you want. Pirate, mercenary, legitmate trader, soldier, escorts military not the bedroom type.. And the one I think is really cool is explorer. They said there are going to be undiscovered areas of the universe and if you are the one to discover them they name them after you.

    They're also going to have super-aircraft carriers that are half destroyed that you can discover. Then you need to fix up and defend and such. Pretty cool ships.

    But apparently you purchase a ship and it shows up in your hanger. Some shipped have lifetime insurance, but that's rare and you can buy insurance in game with what you make in game pretty easily, they say. Then you can walk around inside and stuff. Flying will come a bit later it seems, but won't be too far away.

    You can purchase all of these ships in game. I spent the money I did to support this. I'm really looking forward to it.

    It's not just a line of code. It's the labor of the modeler, artists, riggers, animators, and then coders.

    But besides that, if you look at the rear Admiral pre-purchase option, same price, has the same ship + more. Be a smart shopper, not a reactionary one.

    If I had the cash, I'd go for the rear or vice Admiral packages. But sadly I don't. So I will prolly settle for the $50 price range.

    Im sure you get a ship with the game. When I signed up $60 got me a ship and some other stuff plus the game. I figured I was going to spend the $60 anyway so I could get a bonus out of it . Who knows I might hate it and buy something with in game money ASAP. CHris Roberts has stated multiple times that this will not be pay to win. Everything will be checked and balanced and the people that do well are going to be people that are good at playing not spending real world $$$.

    I look at it as a matter of where you start on the path. $20 or so starts you at step 1. $60 at like step 3. $200+ steps 5-6. At least based on what I have read on the different packages and such.
    Point being, people who wait until release will be able to catch any preordering /funding types. With time and effort. This isn't EVE where skills are trained on a set time table and older characters will always have an advantage in that regard.

    I like this approach and it's a little less harsh on a new player.

    The clarification I needed was that you CAN get the ships via in-game methods. I was thinking you could only buy them with real money. I was a little hesitant with that, but now I know.

    I have a Connie and the wife just grabbed an Aurora for the Alpha slot.
